Donald E. Stout received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering, with distinction, from Pennsylvania State University in 1968 and his J.D., with honors, at The George Washington University National Law Center in 1972. While attending Pennsylvania State University, he was a member of the honorary societies Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Tau, and Eta Kappa Nu.

Specializing in patent litigation with a concentration in electronics and communications technologies, he was previously a partner with Irons & Sears, 1972 80, and later a partner at Roberts & Stout, 1980 82, and associated with LeBlanc, Nolan, Shur & Nies in 1982, until joining the firm in 1983.

He is the author of "Protection of Programming in the Aftermath of Diamond v. Diehr," Computer Law Journal, Vol. IV, 1983.

His professional memberships include the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Bar Association of the District of Columbia.

He is admitted to the bar in Virginia and the District of Columbia and is registered to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Supreme Court. He is also registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
